And the best part, it takes less than five minutes. Do it daily and with a variety of numbers each time. Once they get the hang of it, invite them to quiz you. Having them think about and developing clues for number cards is an extremely powerful way to master number sense for numbers to 100.
On previous occasions of how to learn numbers with a 100s chart Elliot and I have a go with numbers from 1-20. This time, Elliot wants to try numbers up to 30. Coming from him, how can I turn it down. When they initiate action and want to take risks, embrace it.
To begin, Elliot turns away from the 100s chart while I remove ten number cards. Elliot turns back and I read out a clue for each. Each clue is a simple word problem reflecting the amount of each number. Elliot uses evidence from remaining missing number cards and background amounts to help decide which number to call out. He is very successful and enjoys tremendously the time together, getting stuck into Math.
As well as a download for creating your own 100s chart, download our free missing numbers worksheet for kids, so that you and yours can work alongside Elliot in this video. After each clue pause the video and invite them to record the missing number. Try doing your own alongside to help provide a model.
Two versions are included in the download. The first version presents a 100s chart with ten missing numbers to be recorded. The second version provides the 10 missing number squares mixed up in a box below. Review, print, cross out, draw a line from or cut out and glue. Have a go and try your own!
