How To Play Numbers 10-20 Math Games

Math Games For Kids

Play 10-20 Greater Than and learn numbers 10-20 with super cool math games for kids, Elliot and myABCdad Learning for Kids.

Elliot has become more automatic when recalling number names describing numbers amounts from 0-10. His tremendous progress and enthusiasm is connected with playing math games like Greater Than. Have a look at Episode 1 of Greater Than to compare where Elliot was several months ago with where he is now. With his improving knowledge of number, I thought to stretch him a little in this video post by introducing a version of Greater Than that focusses on numbers 10-20.

In this new version, both players place a ten card beside their pile of flipping cards. Each card turned over is placed just to the right of the ten card, which now naturally represents the tens and units columns. This is critical learning for numbers beyond 0 through 9, or units (ones). When a child sees the numbers 11, 12, 13 etc. the first number is often referred to as 1. This, in fact, is not the case. The first digit in 11, 12 and 13 refers to 10. Playing this new version of Greater Than provides a fantastic visual way to demonstrate this very important understanding of numbers.

Discovery of Teens

Elliot and I begin playing the original version, flipping over and comparing amounts from 0-10. Before introducing the new version, I was uncertain if Elliot would catch on. He counts objects to 20 with relative ease, but still cannot identify amounts greater than 10 without at first counting them. Over the course of the game, Elliot indeed picked up the pattern of adding units to the tens. His discovery of teens is infectious and I was over the moon. This leaves little doubt that he will most certainly want to continue playing this new version, as much as he enjoyed playing the original.
