Learn how to paper-mache 3D piggy-banks for kids and enjoy paper-mache art with Elliot and myABCdad Learning for Kids.

In Part 2 of our three part series, Elliot points out after covering our 3D cuboid shapes with paper-mache, that we do indeed need to clean up. For me, this is a great measure of art success with Elliot. Our hands are sticky. The table is a mess. And at one point Elliot suggests we should roll up our sleeves. Thank goodness he was there by my side.

Art does need to be messy and be outside the lines. It is completely natural to be messy. When I work alongside Elliot, I have to check myself from being too tidy. I also need to put the brakes on taking over and doing it my way. In Part 1, after explaining it was best to count the properties of the shape by holding it stationary, Elliot quite rightly points out he uses the title of the shape as a guide.

One on one time…

In the classroom the playing field is different, numbers tend to dictate freedom for children to do as they wish. With Elliot, our time together is one on one, so I need to be careful that he has room to explore and express himself artistically, verbally, mathematically… and so on. Ultimately, I want him to come back, to ask to have another go because he wants more.

To ensure this happens, it needs to flow and be natural without worrying about cleanliness, nor whether it measures up. Elliot does do a fantastic job of covering his cuboid with papier-mâché. When he asks for help I help. Otherwise, I let him try.

In the end, we achieve our goal and are now ready to paint and officially make it an authentic piggy-bank. In my mind, the experience was brilliant. Time will tell if Elliot feels the same way.

Make sure to check out where we came from and learn how to build 3D piggy-banks and where we go learning how to paint 3D piggy-banks of our three part series, where Elliot and I jazz up our piggy banks with a splash of paint.

Thanks for watching, reading about and trying your own.
