Numbers 1 to 40

English And French For Kids

Learning numbers 1-40 for kids in English and French is fun math and language learning with Elliot and myABCdad Learning for Kids.

In this activity, I remove 10 cards from the hundreds chart, between 1 and 40. Elliot only looks, after I have removed all ten cards. I offer a clue for each card, holding them discreetly in one hand. Elliot and I have had a go at this activity before, so my clues are more challenging during this visit as I describe more complex equations. Describing number sentences verbally is a brilliant way to connect language with math. The verbal clues I give for each missing number card, helps Elliot’s listening skills, as he think and computes the meaning carefully. He is also able to use the 100s Chart background of amount cards to support his understanding of each clue.

In producing the video, I cut out many of the silent pauses where Elliot is thinking, as it would mean an incredibly long video filled with vast chasms of thinking and contemplation. What I can reveal, observing Elliot in action, is he often starts all the way back at one, particularly when he knows the answer, but has forgotten the name of a number. He counts in his head, bobbing his forehead slightly as he goes, until he reaches the missing card before announcing the answer.

Counting Up and Counting On

I have observed this strategy often in Kindergarten classrooms all around the world, counting up or counting on silently. It is a natural way to help remember how to say numbers higher up in a sequence. The only difference between a classroom environment and working one on one with Elliot is the time I can give him. Should forget what the name of 34 is for example, then I can give him the time to work it out. Sometimes long periods of time to think and reflect in a classroom setting can become awkward spotlights.

Capitalizing on our math warm-up success, we then carry on by reinforcing his understanding through missing numbers worksheet activity. The same numbers that were removed from the 100s chart are missing on the worksheet. This time around Elliot chooses which ones he would like to start and continue with throughout, a great strategy to help give him a sense of ownership.

Our lesson is very successful as Elliot oozes with confidence and enthusiasm by the end. We are both looking forward to exploring numbers up to fifty next time.

As well as learning numbers with us, check out our video above and listen to Elliot as he says each missing number in both English and French. What a great way to combine language with math learning!
