Learn How To Print Letter R For Kids

Language Arts For Kids

Learn how to print letter R and connect printing letter R with pictures and words with Elliot and myABCdad Learning for Kids.

In our learning video for kids, Elliot first reveals the sound of the letter R. We then use our fingers to create rabbit ears as an action reminder.

Getting stuck into this resource, Elliot begins by showing me how he prints the upper case R. After printing, we then have a look at the sheet of 22 pictures for words that include R. Elliot calls out a best fit word describing each picture, with the goal of identifying whether or not it includes the R sound. When he agrees that the word includes R, I ask him to tell me where – Is it at the beginning, middle or end?

Stretch and Slow Words Down To Read

Learning the letter R together, marks the first time Elliot has reflected on a sheet of just pictures, instead of pictures and words. This is slightly more challenging for him, but he does a fantastic job of slowing words as he says each, effectively stretching out the sounds. This is a terrific reading strategy to use and I was really chuffed that he did so naturally. To give his ears some help listening to sounds, I encourage him to use a big voice when slowing down and stretching out each word.

In my experience as a Kindergarten teacher, both of these strategies are extremely important when sounding out words. I found that stretching sounds in words helps children more easily blend sounds together. Saying sounds with a big, clear voice is also a wonderful way to get ears involved with eyes when decoding words. Reinforcing these strategies with future letter and word activities will really help Elliot learn to read. Way to go Elliot!
