How to Make Number Learning Fun with 2D Shapes

Number Learning Fun with 2D shapes

myABCdad Learning for Kids

Help make number learning fun with 2D shapes, Elliot and his beautiful bilingual knowledge of English and French.

A bit about us…

Elliot is in Grade 1 (Cours préparatoire) in France and he is also having fun learning at home with his dad. My name is Craig and I am Elliot’s dad. I am also the author of this blog post. To dig deeper and find out more about who we are and what we are doing, visit our Who we are page. It is worth noting that Elliot is 6 years old at the time of capturing this learning experience.

Make number learning fun with 2D shapes

Learning to count and learning about the symbols and names of numbers is a process that we all go through. Sometimes though, this process seems to have a more lasting effect on some than others. One strategy to help this process stick, is to create or make numbers. In this example, Elliot and I demonstrate one way with 2D shapes.

Inside the video

In our video tutorial, Elliot and I demonstrate ways to make each number 1 to 10 with 2D coloured, wooden shapes. Along the way, Elliot adds some language learning by saying 2D shape names, colours and number names 1 to 10 in English and French.

Learn how to say square | carré, triangle | triangle, diamond | diamont, hexagon | hexagone and trapezoid | trapèze with Elliot. Then learn blue | bleu, red | rouge, orange | orange, green | vert and yellow | jaune in English and French.

Next, watch as we create each number with our 2D shapes. Along our number journey, listen to Elliot and learn how to say one | un, two | deux, three | trois, four | quatre, five | cinq, six | six, seven | sept, eight | huit, nine | neuf and ten | dix.

Shape Numbers 1 to 10 Activities

2D Shape Numbers Math Worksheets and Number Posters

To help extend this learning experience, I have created an activity that mirrors the shapes used to construct each number. A page of colour shape examples are included for Elliot to cut out and glue in place. Each number name is presented in funky, block letter form and a blank ten grid is included to shade in the corresponding amount. In doing so, this activity helps make an important number learning connection, linking number names and number symbols with number amounts.

Two versions are available for download from our Teachers Pay Teachers store. One version includes number names in English and another version with number names in French. Each version includes poster page examples, each presenting a number name, a shape number symbol and the number amount. Posters can be used as colourful, informative examples to guide activity work around the classroom, or at home.

There are many ways to make each number 1 to 10 with 2D shapes. After having a go with activity worksheets with shape number outlines, invite children to build and create their own.

There are indeed, many ways to create numbers in fun, lasting ways. To promote more number learning magic, join Elliot and his dad and create numbers 0 to 10 with Interstar construction toys.
