Learn How to Add and Subtract

Poster Activities for Kids

Learning to add and subtract is powerful stuff. Develop early addition and subtraction success with this powerful, visual addition and subtraction poster activity. Join Elliot and his dad and start building your add and subtract number sense today.

Addition and subtraction is right there in front of us…

Addition and subtraction is right there in front of us from an early age. We become aware of amounts naturally. We discover our hands, feet, arms, legs, fingers and toes. One hand next to another hand makes more hands. Take one hand away and fewer remain. As we grow, our understanding progresses with objects, people and things around us in our environment. During play, we begin to add to and take away from groups of objects and we also learn to share. Not only is this social learning, but there is mathematical learning also taking place. Children identify when they have more, less than or an equal amount compared with their neighbour.

Children are numerate…

Children are numerate and as their experiences grow, the begin to recognize and understand that amounts have labels, i.e. number symbols – 0, 1, 2, 3… and number names – zero, one, two, three… They begin to make connections with addition and subtraction number sentences or equations where plus and minus symbols are introduced to describe the act of adding to and taking away from. To help cultivate and grow this understanding, we often use familiar objects to model simple addition and subtraction. Seeing and visualizing what is happening is an important step. With this addition and subtraction poster activity, we reinforce this step with amount action pictures. Pictorial examples of adding to and taking away from help are designed to bridge understanding between models we see and the number sentences or equations depicting them.

Addition and Subtraction Poster Activities

Now, with addition and subtraction poster activities, children can make stronger connections between the visual, or the act of adding to and taking away from, and the concrete, the written number sentence or equation. Versions with number names in English and French are also available.

Age Appropriate

This activity is suitable for Kindergarten to Grade 2 but does depend greatly on the children and their individual number sense. I am working with my son Elliot, whom is now in Grade 1 (CP – Cours préparatoire) in France. At the time of our video tutorial, working with a similar addition and subtraction poster activity for number 5, Elliot is 6 years old, and in Kindergarten. The success that Elliot enjoys in our video experience speaks to the activities relevance at home.

I have also taught Kindergarten, in the recent past, where students enjoyed tremendous success and strong progress with this type of activity. I have also taught Grade 2 recently and understand that there are some learners where this type of activity is still very much applicable.

Design Rational

My reasons for concentrating on one number, i.e. 5, for each poster was to help establish connections between numbers in action in the real world. So in the case of number 5, I would typically invite students to explore five and ways to make 5 on the 5th of every month. In this way, it would help justify why we were investigating 5 in closer detail. Introducing these posters between the 1st and 10th day of each month is an ideal way to add to your number connection took kit.

I have also combined addition and subtraction pictures and number sentences, rather than focussing on one or the other. Over time and after watching and observing children playing and of course when deeply engaged in my maths lessons, it occurred to me that in reality we are adding to and taking away from all the time. So rather than isolate, and pitch something less applicable to their world, my aim is to make learning relevant and applicable to what is actually happening around them.

Lesson Plan Ideas

Objectives: In this activity, children will develop basic addition and subtraction operation success. They will make connections between amount action pictures and number sentences targeting numbers from 1 to 10.

Activate Learning: Watch Addition and Subtraction Power for Kids, where I demonstrate how to work through an addition and subtraction poster activity with my son Elliot. He is six years old at the time of the video. I model the act of adding to and taking away from a group of hazelnuts where each outcome equals five. Elliot then chooses an amount action picture that best depicts my actions. He then decides which number sentence best describes each picture.

Model your own examples according to the associated target number.

Process: Cut out amount pictures and number sentence boxes. Three options exist for each target number 1 to 10, to help offer choice. One option presents eight completed number sentences. One option presents four number sentences that children need to complete, according to the amount action picture they match with. A final option, invites children to complete all eight number sentence boxes, making sure to align add and subtract number sentences with amount action pictures depicting adding to and taking away from. Glue together matches and then glue work onto a poster page, of which there are two provided. One example presents giant number name and number symbol outlines. A second example presents a number symbol with a grid layout background, inviting children to explore creating colour patterns.

Take Up / Extensions:

– Use answer sheet example to check work. A central black number name and number symbol with a black and white grid pattern are presented only as examples.

– Celebrate numbers 1 to 10 addition and subtraction posters by placing finished work on classroom or bedroom walls. Doing so will, help children revisit and reflect on ways to make numbers 1 to 10.

– Invite children to draw additional amount action pictures and write their own corresponding number sentences. Paste completed poster page in the center of a larger piece of paper. Glue additional number pictures and sentence efforts around original. Post on a wall that is positioned at a child friendly level, so they can add to and show understanding over time.
