How To Count Numbers 1-20

100s Chart Math

Learn how to count numbers 1-20 with a 100s Chart, Elliot and myABCdad Learning for Kids.

Regular visits to our 100s chart definitely helps Elliot learn numbers. What’s more, he loves it.

In this video activity Elliot replaces 10 number cards, between 1 and 20, missing from the 100s chart. He listens to clues about each number and then calls out what he thinks. After each successful answer he sticks the number card back onto the 100s chart.

Elliot’s understanding of the language of number operations is expanding. When I built in ‘take away’ and ‘add’ into clues nearing the end of this activity, not only was Elliot successful but he attempts to explain and show how he came up with the answers. These experiences help establish a vocabulary for operations. Often verbal connections lead to a stronger understanding of what is taking place in number sentences like 5 – 2 = 3 or 5 + 3 = 8. In future visits, I will continue to include clues that use take away (-), add (+), groups of (×) and share (÷) to describe some of the missing number cards.

Time and Space

The time it took Elliot to think about his answers also helped reaffirm why time and space is important when working with children. Elliot has had a go at this activity, replacing missing number cards from 1 to 20 on the 100s chart several times now. Throughout these experiences, I have come to learn that he often finds the correct answer, given enough time to think about it. In this session, it really helped me to stop and watch him, his expressions and what he might be looking at to help him work out answers.

Extend 100s Chart Math

To help extend this experience Elliot then has a go at working on a Missing Numbers 100s Chart worksheet. After finishing Elliot then checks his work with the answer sheet. The photo series below, showcases Elliot working through the first of 35 different missing numbers worksheets. As the school year progresses and to help compliment his growing knowledge of numbers to 100, Elliot will be given the opportunity to work on several more 100s chart missing numbers worksheets.
