How to Make an Action Tree of Colours

Learn how to make an Action Tree full of bright colours and inspire positive action with Elliot and his dad.

An Action Tree is something I have long used in primary classrooms to help motivate positive action, choices and decisions. Each year I would cut out a tree from a large piece of cardboard before painting it brown. The Action Tree would be planted or stapled to a bulletin board inside, or outside, the classroom. Throughout the year, after writing and presenting Action Leaves, I would attach them to our Action Tree. Each year, the Action Tree grew and grew. By the end of the school year, the Action Tree became a reflection of all the positive learning. It also enabled parents and the wider school community to reflect and even contribute. This became a nice link with positive actions and choices made at school and those made at home.

Action Tree at Home

Now Elliot, age 6, and I have planted our very own Action Tree at home. With a large piece of cardboard, some coloured paper, glue and scissors we work together to create a really cool, colourful tree. We attached Elliot’s first Action Leaf to the tree and will continue to do so, helping acknowledge the great things he does inside and away from home.

Like in classrooms, over time, our action tree will also grow. As Elliot becomes a reader and writer, he too will be able to read and reflect on his own positive actions. I also anticipate him starting to write leaves acknowledging actions of others in our family.

Elliot loves the Action Tree. And even more so, as he had a hand in making it. Watch our video to help you make your own Action Tree.
