How To Float Boats For Kids With Lego DUPLO

Fun Science for Kids

Learning about floating and sinking is fantastic fun science for kids with a Lego DUPLO boat, Elliot and myABCdad Learning for Kids.

Elliot often builds Lego DUPLO boats to accompany his time in the bath. Each version is different. His first investigation usually involves checking to see if the boat even floats. As Lego is plastic, there is every chance of success. But as many of us know, the stability of the vessel is also critical for enjoying a safe, dry voyage. The same is true for Elliot’s boat in the bath, any real quality play requires one that floats and stays upright.

On this occasion, when Elliot releases his Lego DUPLO ferry into the water, he quickly identifies a major problem – it rolls onto it’s side. Rather than abandoning his vessel and turning his attention to proven water toys, we decide to see if we can modify his design. Within this exploration, the science begins to flow.

To help stabilize the boat, we widen the middle and then lengthen the stabilizer below. Elliot tests again and voila, his boat floats. He is ecstatic and proceeds to spend the duration of his time in the bath, ferrying passengers to and fro.

Elliot and I then agree that his discovery is worth sharing with you. Make sure to watch Learn How To Build A Lego DUPLO Boat With Elliot to help build your own. Then have a go at floating your boat.
