At the end of September Elliot draws thirty tallies to mark the 30th day of the month. He now recognizes groups of five and is aware that 30 is the same as six groups of five.

With this wall calendar a child having a go at drawing tallies to represent the number of the day.

This daily experience enables Elliot to reflect on the symbols and weather patterns over a month. He is also able to make connections when drawing amounts. For myself as a parent, after repeating the task of marking tallies and choosing the weather for each day of September, I now appreciate the value of growing amounts over time. Visually it is a great stimulus for developing strong number sense.
